Some General Rules

  1. Asanas should not be done immediately after a meal.  It should be at least 4 hours after lunch and two hours after breakfast.  Stimulant beverages should not be consumed.
  2. Asanas can be done post or pre-bathing with 30 minutes of the gap.
  3. Don’t do a series of physical exercises and asanas immediately.  Inhale as long as necessary between them.
  4. Relaxation of the body in the asana position is required.  Physical and mental anxieties should be left in the asana position. Small intervals between two asanas are required.
  5. After practicing asana, the practitioner should not experience fatigue, lethargy, or distillation, as he would experience rejuvenation.
  6. Do not try beyond your strength to stay in the asana for a long time. Progress should be increased over time.
  7. The daily routine must be practiced for rapid improvement.

Pawana Muktasana/ Wind Relieving pose

The first posture

  • Lay straight on the Yoga Mat. Join the heels and toes together and extend the arms over the head.
  •  Lift the right leg upright 45 degrees. Lay the left leg on the floor without moving.  Inhale a little.
  •  Breathe in full and raise the right leg from the ground up to 90^.
  • Bend the right knee and pull it towards your chest with the hands and exhale.
  • Lift the head and bring the chin to the right knee.
  • Lift the left leg a little and rotate 5 times in a clockwise direction and 5 times in an anti-clockwise direction.  Breathing should be normal in this position.

Start with the second posture of condition. 

  • Raise both your legs up to 45 degrees. Keep the knees bent.  Inhale slowly.
  • Take a deep Breathe, place your feet 90^ from the ground.

Pawanamukthasana

  • Roll to the right so that the right-hand touches the ground in the same way role to the left so that the left-hand touches the ground.  Do this 5 times.

  Trikonasanam /Triangular Pose

  • Stand in position Place the right foot one meter away from the left foot, slowly raise both hands to the side and inhale until they are in the same position.

  • The left palm should show forward and the fingers of the left-hand point towards the sky.

Parivrtta Trikonasana /Revolved Triangular pose

ArdhaChakrasana

Padahastasana.

  • Tilt the back and bend the body forward so that it is parallel to the floor.  Try to pull the spine fully forward when bending.
  • Stretch the body from the bottom of the spine upwards.
  •  Exhale, place the palms on the floor next to the feet,
  •  Hold your ankles without hands and bend your body until the forehead touches the knees. The knees should not bend in this position.
  •  Hold for about two minutes with normal breathing.
  •  Come back to the standing position

  • Prevents constipation.
  • Corrects menstrual irregularities in women.

Vajrasana

  •  Sit on a yoga mat, with legs forward position. Slowly fold the right leg and sit on the heel. Do the same with the left leg and sit on the heel.
  • Join the knees.  Keep the spine straight. The head and back should be at the right angle to the floor.
  • Place the palms on either the thighs or above the knees.  Close your eyes and meditate. Come back to the position after a few minutes.Vajrasana

Shashankasana /Hare Pose

In the same vajrasana pose, hold the right wrist behind the back.  Bend forward from the waist.  Lay your forehead on the floor.

 Paschimottanasana/ Seated Forward Bend

  • Sit on a yoga mat, with legs forward position, raise both arms parallel to the floor until they come into a single straight line.
  • Raise your hand so that the shoulders should touch the ears and the palms of the hands should face forward and stretch the upper body from the waist Inhale.
  • Exhale and bend the body forward.  The body and arms should be parallel to the floor.
  • Hold the toes with the index fingers. Place the face on the knees.  Bend the elbows so that they touch the floor. Do not bend the knees.
  • Relax the abdominal muscles.
  • Stay tuned for two minutes.

Vakrasana/Twisted Pose

  • Wait a minute and return back to the normal sitting position.  Do the same for the left side.

Bhujangasana/Cobra pose

  • Bend the elbows and place the palms on the floor.  Keep the elbows close to the body. First, slowly lift the head from the floor and then the body in a snake-like manner, (you can also take the help of your hands to push the floor in order to erect your body further).
  • In this position, the navel should barely touch the ground.

This plant guntagalagara is well known to many people.  This is called Bhringaraja.  It is very easy to grow in pots.  This plant has small white flowers with a nice look.  The famous Bhrangamalaka Tailam is made from this plant.

 10.Ashwagandha/Penneru: (Withuania somnifera, Solanaceae)

It is also known as ashwagandha, winter cherry, and can be easily cultivated by seeds.  The leaves and roots are very useful  By the time the flowers bloom the root hardens.  The tuber can be cut into pieces, dried, and stored.

  • Consuming it as powder boiled with milk, chances of decreasing heart disease, dizziness, nerve weakness, and nourishes the body’s energy capabilities. It boosts immunity and also useful for pregnant women and nursing mothers.
  • Using this in prophylactic patients with AIDS, cancer, and tuberculosis.  It also reduces joint pains.
  • Excess body fat is dissolved.  The boredom that comes after a fever is reduced.  Increases appetite.

 

So this is all about plants that are suitable for growing in the pots of the back yard and with all the beauty and medicinal value. It is also easy to raise such ones.  No need to use fertilizers and pesticides.  Changing the soil occasionally and watering twice a week is sufficient.  These also make the home environment cleaner.

Loss of Nutrients in your food: while cooking

we lose lots of nutrients like protein, fat, amino acids, thiamine, Nicotinic acid unknowingly with our regular activities, Nearly all foodstuffs with the exception of fruits and some leafy vegetables used either as salads or chutneys are consumed after cooking.

Cooking involves the following processes

  • The wet methods of treatment like boiling and steaming.
  • Dry methods of treatment like frying, roasting, and baking.

The wet methods of cooking lead to comparatively greater loss of vitamins than the dry methods.

Ordinary cooking causes little loss of nutrients in cereals, pulses, and meat. In vegetables, however, there may be some protein loss on boiling in water, particularly when salt is used in cooking and the cooking water is discarded. If the cooking water is thrown away there is considerable loss of mineral salts especially sodium, potassium, and chlorine due to leaching.

It is therefore advisable either to use the minimum amount of water or to utilize the cooking liquor in either soups or gravies.

Root Vegetables do not suffer much loss in nutrients by either wet or dry methods of cooking, because the skin of most root vegetables prevents leaching out of the nutrients. It is, therefore, preferable to boil them with their skins on.

Methods of Cooking:

It may be preferable to cook leafy vegetables with a lid on the minimum exposure to air and in the minimum quantity of water. The sooner the preparation is consumed after cooking, the better it would be.

  • Further, it is not advisable to peel and cut the vegetables long before they are ready for boiling.
  • They may be cut into big pieces as possible, and add immediately to the boiling water and cook as short time as possible.
  • Losses due to leaching are less if the vegetables are just steamed.
  •  Excessive heating of foodstuffs may, however, affect the nutritive value of the proteins adversely by rendering some of the amino acids contained in the proteins unavailable to the body. Excessive and prolonged heating should be avoided.

Loss of Nutrients in cooking & cleaning process:

  • A certain amount of minerals and vitamins are lost even during preliminary treatment of washing prior to cooking. It is common for housewives to wash rice three or four times with large amounts of water before cooking. Rice of poor commercial quality naturally requires more washing than rice of good quality does, and in the process, there is a loss of minerals. The B vitamins especially thiamine and nicotinic acid are also lost to the extent of about 40%. The rice broth is strained away along with a part of vitamins after cooking rice.
  • However be mentioned that broth though it carries a small portion of the vitamins and minerals contained in the original rice, is not as high in nutritive value as is generally believed. It will be a good practice to wash the rice only if necessary with the least quantity of water and cook it in just a sufficient amount of water so that all the water is absorbed and no broth is discarded.
  • More than the minerals, it is the vitamins particularly the members of the water-soluble group that show a greater loss as a result of cooking.
  • Vitamin A or carotene is not affected when foodstuffs are cooked in water. But in shallow frying or roasting, there may be considerable loss of vitamin.
  • The loss in thiamine due to cooking may be occasioned partly by destruction during cooking and partly by the dissolution of the vitamin in the cooking water. If excess water is used and the cooking water is discarded, a loss of  50% of the vitamins can occur. Further, if cooking soda is added especially while cooking dhal’s or pulses to facilitate cooking or to preserve the color of the dhal, most of the thiamine is destroyed.
  • Conversely, a substance like a tamarind with high acidity, if added to cooking water has a preservative effect on the vitamins. 
  • Since in most houses a dish is rarely consumed immediately after cooking, it is desirable to include some raw fruit or vegetables in the diet as a source of Vitamin C.
  • Milk is a poor source of Vitamin C  and a major portion of this vitamin is lost in boiling.
  • Eggs appear to suffer little loss in nutritive value as a result of the conventional methods of cooking.
